Area Description

Westminster Centre is located in the heart of New Westminster’s vibrant Uptown neighbourhood, the city centre of New Westminster. The area features the largest concentration of retail stores/activity and is the location of most financial institutions in the city. A high number of medical services and recreational facilities, including the public library and the Massey Theatre (1,260 seats) are also located in the neighbourhood.

The Uptown area is centered around the intersection of Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue ("Centre Ice"). Two large shopping centres, Westminster Centre and Royal City Centre, are located at this intersection. The shopping district extends a few blocks either way on Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue.

Uptown is also a high density residential neighbourhood, with over 20 high rise residential buildings and more in the planning/design phase. More than 22,000 people live within a 1 kilometer radius (a short 10 minute walk) from the intersection of Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue.

The Uptown neighbourhood is in the geographical centre of the city of New Westminster. New Westminster’s population totals close to 60,000 people and is the 3rd fastest growing municipality in the Greater Vancouver area. This growth rate is estimated to reach a population in excess of 80,000 by 2021.
